# Variables

**Variables** let you store values once and reuse them across the nodes of an Advanced Workflow — for example a threshold, a fixed recipient, or a value you read from the document and pass to a later node. Open the variables panel from the **variables** button (the `{ }` icon) in the toolbar.

## Variable types

Variables are grouped by their type:

* **Text** — a string value (e.g. a description or a fixed label).
* **Yes/No** — a boolean flag (Yes / No).
* **Document** — a reference to a document or document field.

Use the search box to find a variable quickly when the list grows.

## Creating a variable

Click **New Variable**, give it a name and a type, and set its value. The variable then becomes available to reference from the cards on your nodes, so you can keep configuration in one place and change it without editing every node.

## Next steps

* See how nodes use these values in [Nodes](/administration-and-setup/workflow/advanced-workflow-builder/nodes.md).
* Validate and run the workflow in [Validation & Testing](/administration-and-setup/workflow/advanced-workflow-builder/validation-and-testing.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.docbits.com/administration-and-setup/workflow/advanced-workflow-builder/variables.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
