# Duplicate a Custom Validation Rule

Make a separate copy of an existing custom validation rule for a document type.

Use **Duplicate** when a rule is a useful starting point and you want a separate copy. DocBits copies the rule's definition; you choose the new rule's name and key. The original rule stays in the list.

1. Go to **Settings → Document Types**, open the document type you want to configure, and select **Custom Validation Rules**. The page shows the selected document type above its rule cards. See [Document Types](/administration-and-setup/settings/global-settings/document-types.md) for the other settings available there.
2. Find the source rule. Use the search field or the scope and status filters if the list is long. Open its three-dot actions menu and select **Duplicate**. You can copy a system default or a custom rule.
3. In **Rule Name**, keep the suggested name ending in “Copy” or enter a clearer name. The **Rule Key** is generated from that name. Select the pencil icon if you need to edit the key yourself.
4. Select **Duplicate** to create the separate rule. DocBits refreshes the list after saving. Select **Cancel** to close the dialog without creating a copy.

The **Duplicate** button needs both a name and a key. If saving fails, DocBits shows an error; correct the name or key and try again. Review the new rule before activating or changing it, because a copy starts with the source rule's definition.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.docbits.com/administration-and-setup/settings/global-settings/document-types/duplicate-a-custom-validation-rule.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
